One man weighing system eases aircraft load

General Electrodynamics Corp has demonstrated a new aircraft weighing model that can be set up, used and stored away by one person in under two hours. It was put to the test in a recent exercise using a fully loaded aircraft.

Was the tail number weighed since its last modification? Were the ARMS taken properly? Was the aircraft inventoried before it was weighed? Was the CG within the allowable envelope?

If you can’t answer each of these questions, you could be endangering the lives of many while compromising millions of dollars in flight safety, according to Texas-based General Electrodynamics Corp.

With over 50 years’ experience, GEC has maintained a continuum of R&D investments, aiming to assure its customers of the most accurate and advanced equipment on the market. Today, the company has systems in over 120 countries.

During a recent FAA ETOPS certification exercise with Aloha Airlines, and with a fully loaded aircraft, the AN60-6 portable aircraft weighing system utilised the latest technology with “system” accuracies of 0.1% or better, so fewer man hours were needed to perform weight and balance, which meant that the aircraft was retained at the gate for less time before takeoff.

With many new operational weight and balance applications being identified, the company’s latest model, the AN60-6, is helping to drive the demand for better weighing equipment. Each platform is only 5.08 centimetres high, weighing only 31.75 kilograms with a capacity of 27,273 kilograms. The scales can also communicate via bluetooth protocol to a pocket PC containing GEC’s proprietary CG software.

This Boeing Seattle tested and approved scale makes entry of the aircraft on and off the platforms easy and instead of levelling the aircraft after it rests on the scales, it can be performed before reaching the scales. The scale platforms, ramps, bridges and end stops are so lightweight that one man can physically set up the system, weigh a 747, and store the system away in less than two hours. GEC’s technology now aims to make the aircraft weighing process and CG calculations simple and efficient.
