Embraer adds milk cartons to recycling programme

Embraer has announced plans to boost its recycling targets by adding milk cartons to its list of reusable materials. Cartons of milk will return to the company in the form of recycled paper.

At the Faria Lima Facility in Sao Jose dos Campos, 7,000 litres of milk are consumed every week, 7,000 per week less dumped at the city’s landfill.

All Embraer units are engaged in the recycling programme, which began in 1998. The programme encompasses plastic, metals, paper and cooking oil, which it reuses as soap or as fuel for the cement furnaces.

Last year, 256 tons of aluminium and 3.6 tons of titanium were sold to firms contracted by Embraer to process these materials.

All of the recycled items generated a total income of R$11.6 million in 2004, the company claimed.
