Project launched to develop motor for all-electric aircraft

A project to research novel superconducting motors for future hybrid and all-electric aircraft has been launched by NASA’s John H Glenn Research Center, Ohio.

SatCon Technology Corporation has been awarded a Phase ISBIR contract to develop a superconducting machine that should improve efficiency and reduce size and cost over competing technologies.

For Phase II, SatCon will collaborate with an aircraft manufacturer to develop a design prototype targeted for a specific aircraft application.

The initial design is targeted as a propulsion motor for unmanned all electric aircraft, but the technology is also suitable for hybrid electric aircraft as a main superconducting generator.

The motors will use high temperature superconducting wire able to operate at upto -223C (-369F). The two motors al....
