The Cambridge-MIT (University of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology) project has been working on an aerodynamically sound design that envisages engines mounted on top of the flying wing and embedded in the fuselage. It is working with Boeing using its blended-wing body design code and Rolls-Royce in Derby, UK, is helping with a radically new engine design.

This needs to balance the reduced jet speed required for noise reduction against the level of thrust required for take-off.
