Green engine project set to go ahead

Final touches are being put to a project designed to produce a “green” aero engine. The European Commission has approved U.K. state aid for the programme. But the U.K.’s Rolls-Royce, which is leading the programme says, that a “few i’s need to be dotted and t’s crossed. The Friendly Engine (EFE) research effort is likely to start this winter.

The project will run until 2011 and examine a broad range of technologies applicable to an environmentally-friendly aero engine. Likely partners in the programme are Bombardier, Smiths, HS Marston and Goodrich with participating UK universities including Queen’s, Belfast, Birmingham, Cambridge, Loughborough, Oxford and Sheffield. “Technology from the programme could feed into the next group of engines for Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.....
