New research aims to land more tyre design improvements

The U.K.’s Cranfield University has launched an off-road dynamics facility over at its Silsoe site. Research could feed through to more efficient aircraft landings and take-offs.

A spokeswoman says: “The facility is based around four unique pieces of equipment including a smart winch and single wheel test apparatus which is used for tyre design optimisation and data acquisition for braking and vehicle control system development. It has various applications in the aviation industry.”

She adds: “It is the only facility of its type in the U.K. to study the relationship between machines and the soil environment in controlled conditions.”
