New Stemme 'three in one' production process cuts costs

By Rod Smith

German aircraft design specialist Stemme is refining a development that allows it to produce three aircraft from one production line process. "The new development in the manufacturing process will be put into operation early in 2007," marketing and sales executive Karen Stemme says.

Two motorgliders and one pure glider will be produced using the cost cutting modular design process.

"The gliders are different in concept but the production line has been designed so that parts can be substituted. This means that we can adapt production to market demand," Stemme adds. The company, set up in the 1980s, coordinates its key activities and its production in Germany with parts supplied from Czechoslovakia and Poland. The production process will be used on producing a new range.

Stemme says: "The new TSA line of aircraft encompasses a pure glider, the S2, a high-power motorglider, the S6, and a touring motorglider, the S8. The modular design allows for the utilisation of common components in all three models, streamlining production and making it more flexible."

There are key differences but the motorgliders will share a design feature used in the earlier Stemme S10-VT, an engine installed behind the pilots, near the centre of gravity, driving a nose mounted propeller via shaft driver.

However, the S10-VT's folding propeller will not be used, as this is reserved for the high-end soaring ship, the world famous S10-VT. "A full feathering 3-blade Muehlbauer constant-speed prop will b....
