All systems go for research into greener jets

Scores of European researchers are working on new concepts that will produce faster, lighter, smaller and greener private jets.

The research is being conducted under the auspices of the Cost Effective Small Aircraft (CESAR) project, which involves 35 commercial and academic organisations across the E.U. It will examine all aspects of aircraft design and development with the ultimate aim of producing a viable new concept for aircraft with between ten and 50 seats.

Dr Nigel Schofield and a small team of researchers from the Power Conversion Group at the University of Manchester will focus on developing electrical systems to operate external flight control surfaces including the rudder, wing flaps ....
