3M seeks new injection moulding breakthrough

3M plans further research and testing in conjunction with aerospace companies to develop next generation injection moulded parts that would make future aircraft lighter.

The company is expanding the laboratory at its headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota, to include a new plastics extrusion lab. Roy Chapple from the technical sales, energy and advanced materials division of 3M U.K. says: "The lab will allow researchers to develop optimised product formulations and data packages and introduce iM30K in new applications. There is strong interest from aerospace companies in a product that can replace conventional fillers in various injection moulded interior parts. These include passenger service units, tray tables, arm rests, air vents, toilet seats, galley surfaces and containers and electric....
