May 2007 edition

Enabling ECAD process improvements with innovative COTS technologies

By John Low

Airframer is reviewing design and manufacturing innovations designed to feed through to the building of lighter and more efficient aircraft through innovative approaches to cabling and electrics.

The April 2007 issue highlights included: Developers look to harness the benefits of more efficient electrical systems • Bell backs virtual prototype approach to electrical architecture to cut costs • Trace Technologies plans global marketing of cost saving fibre optic harness systems software • Advances in electrical and mechanical integration for aerospace design.

The May 2007 issue focuses on the growing impetus behind developing new capabilities for electrical architecture, the interconnect for ‘black box’ technology applications, and an increasing Rolls-Royce emphasis on electrical technology development.

Over the years, there have been advances in many aerospace companies’ use of new tools for the Mechanical Computer Aided Design (MCAD) domain. Digital mock-up capability in the 1990s provided significant value to an organisation to be able to visualise a product before any manufacturing was started. Now, there is virtual prototyping for many other mechanical aspects of a company’s organisation, including factory floor automation. However the Electrical Computer Aided Design (ECAD) domain has not seen similar advancements until recently.

In many aerospace companies, the grou....
