Grob limits supply chain, while Dassault integrates
Ever-rising customer expectations and competition for orders and sales mean that any next generation commercial aircraft must always offer more. It needs to be faster, lighter, more comfortable and fuel efficient as well as safer. Rod Smith details and contrasts the approach of different manufacturers to building business jets from initial design to final production. Dassault is further developing the Virtual Plateau to coordinate expertise and input from 28 locations around the world. Grob Aerospace is harnessing its expertise at one dynamic headquarters that relies on the minimum of subcontractors. The Grob spn - 'Back to basics' simplicity of the airframe structure and components.
- Composite material and parts emphasis with metal used only if composite alternatives proved unworkable or impossible in the light of practicalities or the tight schedule.
- Design differential: Simplicity based on composites.
- Manufacturing differential: Low temperature process that is widespread for smaller aircraft but not commonly used for larger jets.
Grob Aerospace went back to its past expertise in composites and forward to next generation avionics as it designed its multipurpose business jet of the future. "Typical metal-based aircraft use 15,000 parts for a fuselage structure: our spn needs just 150," says md Dr. Andreas Strohmayer. "Advances in aircraft design do not have to mean increasing complexity of structure: you can produce next ge....
