Special purpose machine designed to cut set-up time

A special purpose machine will enhance the progress of the manufacture of major parts for the A400M military transport aircraft which is due to make its first flight in 2008. The 5+2-axis CNC machine is designed to auto-matically drill and fettle leading and trailing edge assemblies for the aircraft's wings.

Its maker HYTRI is a joint venture between production engineering specialist AMTRI and the privately-owned aerospace tooling design and manufacturing enterprise Hyde Group which operates globally from its bases in the U.K.

Philip Sholl, AMTRI md, says: "The machine employs a many clever design innovations to minimise set-up times and position features with high precision on very large workpieces."
