Lessons learned from Dreamliner delay could affect future manufacturing approach

Boeing could build its next aircraft differently and concentrate major partner factories at a single manufacturing site, according to the former head of the Dreamliner program.

In a speech to the Snohomish County Economic Development Council, Mike Bair suggested that Boeing might consider a supersite concept where supplier factories are located alongside final assembly.

According to an article in Flight International, costly delays in the delivery of the Dreamliner resulted from the production system in Everett being overwhelmed with parts work that should have been done by suppliers. Bair told delegates that some suppliers had performed poorly and would therefore probably not be used again.
