Cessna and Airbus accelerate programs to develop manufacturing in China

Cessna and Airbus, prominent among western aircraft manufacturers accelerating the development of joint ventures in China, have taken new steps to increase their capacity and profits. With China on course to become the world's second largest aviation market, the two manufacturers are seeking to expand market share and lower manufacturing costs while Beijing wants to develop indigenous capability and technology.

Cessna will partner with Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) to manufacture the new Model 162 SkyCatcher light sport aircraft (LSA). SAC is a subsidiary of China Aviation Industry Corporation I (AVIC I), which is a government-owned consortium of aircraft manufacturers. Airbus has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) to formalise the commitment of allocating five per cent of the A350XWB airframe to the Chinese aviation industry.

By 2010 China expects to have 186 airports representing a total investment of $17.7 billion. Domestic demand for aircraft is expected to grow in tandem but, significantly, Beijing wants to increase exports as well as manufacturing capacity. Premier Wen Jiabao says the development of China's aerospace industry has been based on self-reliance and innovation. But he stresses that more efforts should be made in scientific research. China should strengthen its basic research ability and the education of trained personnel. Jiabao also calls for more international communication and coop....
