Celebration of ‘world first’ centenary looks forward to the next 100 years

Short Brothers was registered in Battersea, England, as an aircraft manufacturer in November 1908, and then began manufacturing aircraft for pioneers including the Wright brothers. The manufacturer established a factory in Belfast in 1936, and became part of Bombardier Aerospace in 1989.

But although Bombardier Aerospace, Belfast, may be enjoying a centenary year of celebrations its business focus is very much on the next 100 years, as this in-depth Airframer review details.

The whole history of Bombardier Belfast is one of innovation to survive. In November 1908 the three Short brothers, Horace, Eustace and Oswald, won a contract to build six Wright Flyers for the Wright brothers. "This led to the brothers being described as the first aircraft manufacturers in the world," Ryan says.

Advances over the last century include the first all-metal aircraft, the Silver Streak; the famous flying boats that opened up the long distance routes to the Far East and Sout....
