Manufacturing begins on replacing Pakistan's military fleet

Mass assembly of the JF-17 fighter jet began last month at an aircraft manufacturing plant in the northwest of Pakistan. The Pakistani Air Force has said it plans to procure 150-300 new aircraft to eventually replace its current fleet of Chengdu F-ZP military fighters.

The JF-17 Thunder, also known as the FC-1 Fierce Dragon in China, is a single-seat multirole fighter aircraft developed by China and Pakistan. Around half of the on-board equipment and avionics for the aircraft will be made in Pakistan, and the rest will come from China.

The air force said it hopes that 15 aircraft will be produced this year, 20 more in 2009, with the ultimate goal of manufacturing 25-30 aircraft per year. ....
