Factory series: Assembling greater focus as engine gets ready to become a commercial reality

Snecma is bringing its massive experience in producing commercial aviation engines to bear on developing what it believes will be the favoured engine from around 2014 for the super midsize to large business jet.

There is a strong ongoing focus on improving assembly efficiency combined with a determination to deliver between five and 15 per cent lower specific fuel consumption plus at least a 25 per cent better climb and cruise thrust than current generation engines. "Snecma is drawing on three sources to achieve these ambitious goals; extensive experience with the low pressure section on the CFM56 turbofan, and core engine expertise from its military engines and the DEM21 core demonstrator," according to Jacques Renvier, vp system engineering and integration.

The Silvercrest will feature a four-stage axial compressor plus a single-stage centrifugal compressor, a configuration that is intended to optimise the Silvercrest thrust range. "This is because it reduced the number of stages for a simpler, lighter engine," Renvier explains. From the environmental standpoint, Snecma is aiming at an average of 50 per cent below current CAEP6 emission standards, and a noise level fully 30EPNdB lower than Stage 3 requirements. "This is significantly better than engines now in service," says Renvier. The overall focus is, therefore, on a fuel efficient design, noise reduction and a competitive pricing target.

Already Snecma is liaising and working with airframers to ensure, as far as it ....
