Factory series: Designers of the 'quiet revolution' are finally ready to shout their engineering message out loud to the world

Companies who wish to get ahead in the competitive world of aircraft engine manufacture must plan and invest in design and development at least a decade ahead of any prospect of gaining related revenue.

The high risk/high reward strategy must be accompanied by the pragmatism to ruthlessly discard even the best ideas if the time for them is not right – and the experience to recognise when technology, airframer needs and client demand has advanced to make the ideas of yesterday a winner for tomorrow. And finally the manufacturer must be able to protect what may be a hard won and fragile knowledge edge over the competition while delegating increasingly advanced work to sub-contractors in cost-effective locations so that it can trim its price and assembly and production times. There is a fine line between success and failure and the process needs constant monitoring and fine tuning.

Silvercrest can now benefit from streamlined production and the consequent lower pricing that has come on-stream following two complementary ongoing approaches to ramp up assembly – lean manufacturing and Six Sigma.

Jacques Renvier, vp system engineering and integration, praises the contribution of the workforce and managers to what he terms "The Lean and the Six Sigma." Each manufacturer today has its own definition of what a 'lean manufacturing' approach entails. Snecma says 'The Lean' requires a constant focus on improving cycle times.
