Success for fuel cell aircraft test flight

A collaborative project to design, build and test a light aircraft powered by a fuel cell has resulted in a successful first manned flight. Boeing Research & Technology Europe joined with a number of European and US partners to design, build and test the aircraft. Intelligent Energy provided the fuel cell power system. The airframe is based on a two-seat Dimona motor glider with a 16.3 m wingspan.

Three test flights took place in February and March at an airfield in Spain, where the pilot climbed to 1,000 m above sea level using a combination of battery power and power generated by the hydrogen fuel cells, cruising for 20 minutes at a speed of 100 km per hour.
