KLM adopts weight-saving painting method

KLM Engineering and Maintenance, working together with German paint supplier Mankiewicz, has developed a new aircraft painting system which it says reduces the weight of the paint by 15%. The application of thinner paint layers results in a smoother finish and the weight reduction lowers fuel consumption.

The paint is chromate-free and the aircraft can be degreased primarily using soap and water, thereby reducing the amount of harmful solvents. The new paint also requires less drying time. The new system has been used on a 747 freighter and three 737s. Four more will follow next month. This green painting system is just one initiative by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to reduce environmental impact.....
