Supply chain initiative gathers pace

The Supply Chains in the 21st Century initiative, launched in Britain two years ago in a bid to raise industry standards, has accrued 348 members with plans to reach 500 by the end of the year.

SC21, which will award companies a bronze, silver or gold rating, was set up by the Society of British Aerospace Companies to increase competitiveness of the UK's aerospace and defence industry by improving the performance of its supply chain.

The scheme focuses on issues such as lean manufacturing, performance management and improved relations between prime contractors and the rest of the supply chain, in particular with small and medium-sized businesses.
