GKN develops new fuel bladder material

A new material has been launched that could significantly reduce the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and manufacturing times. GKN Aerospace has developed a single-skin flexible fuel bladder material that offers crash resistance and puncture tolerance.

Frank Bamford, senior vp of business development and strategy, said: "We estimate that the use of this material could lead to a 60 per cent reduction in the use of VOCs and a 30 per cent reduction in manufacturing times - while the weight of each fuel bladder could be reduced by around five per cent through the removal of the adhesive coatings used in traditional bladder construction."
