Airbus investigates suitability of ‘ultra-hard’ coating for commercial use

A company based in the United Kingdom has signed an agreement with Airbus to help expand the market for its 'ultra-hard' coating technology into the aerospace industry.

Hardide Coatings' tungsten carbide-based technology will undergo a three-year test programme with Airbus to assess its suitability as a chrome-replacement product, which is less environmentally-friendly.

The coating, Hardide, is said to be very tough with a high level of abrasion and chemical resistance. It is produced using a low-temperature chemical vapour deposition process, usually at a temperature of around 500 degrees C.

The coating is therefore limited to metals such as stainless steel, nickel, cobalt and copper....
