Flight Design earns multiple certifications

With the American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Aircraft Certification Branch planning to begin visits to Light-Sport Aircraft manufacturers later this year, some companies are scrambling to prepare for those government inspections. Flight Design was again evaluated to positive result but this is standard procedure for the German producer.

In June 2011, the Certification Body of TÜV SÜD Management Service GmbH awarded four certificates to Flight Design. Such inspections are rigorous and the effort consumes many hours by auditors and the manufacturer's engineering, quality control, and administrative staff. These visits are requested by Flight Design, which pays for the evaluation. Of course, they will also prepare the company for an inspection FAA or any other government organization may choose to perform.

The company was evaluated at its primary fabrication facility in Kherson, Ukraine to be given TÜV

certification that Flight Design, "has established and applies a quality management system for design, development, and manufacturing of light airplanes." An audit was performed in compliance with EN 9104:2006 and TÜV auditors reported, "Proof has been furnished that the requirements according to EN 9100:2003 aerospace series quality management systems requirements, technically equivalent to AS 9100 and JISQ 9100, are fulfilled." The certificate is valid until 20 April 2014.

Using similar criteria, Flight design earned a successful result with their final assembly facility in Kamenz, Germany for the "Assembly, check flights, and shipping of light airplanes." The headquarters administrative offices in Kircheim unter Teck, Germany were given approval for the "Administration and sales of light airplanes." And finally, the engineering division in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany received a certificate for the "Design, development, manufacturing, and sales of light airplanes."

"After these repeat evaluations by the professionals at TÜV SÜD, our company is fully prepared for an FAA visit," stated Flight Design GmbH CEO, Matthias Betsch. "But perhaps even more importantly, customers of our CT series aircraft can feel more confident in the best practices of our company."

Flight Design is a 24-year-old air-sport products producer based in Germany. The company remains the worldwide market leader thanks to its well-received CT series of light aircraft. More than 1,700 of these aircraft are flying in 40 countries. One of the first aircraft certified under ASTM International standards in 2005, the CT ("composite technology") remains the top-selling LSA in America through six consecutive years. Flight Design sold the first LSA to India and was the first LSA to earn Chinese Type Design Approval. Three times a CT has been flown around the world.
