Ipcote IP9183R1, manufactured by Indestructible Paint Ltd, Birmingham UK, has now been formally approved to SNECMA aero engine's specification DMR 74-052 for use on certain internal gas turbine aero engine components.
It is to be applied in accordance with Snecma process spec DMP16– 049.
A specialised inorganic aluminium/ceramic based high corrosion and heat resistant coating, Ipcote IP9183R1 has undergone rigorous testing by SNECMA for a period of 3 1/2 years before gaining the company's approval.
Ipcote IP9183R1 contains only 37 ppm chrome 6 and a maximum total chrome content of less than 2%.
With lower chrome levels than previously available coatings designed for the same purpose, Ipcote IP9183R1 has the additional benefit of five times greater corrosion resistance when tested to ASTM B117 salt spray.
The coating will be used initially on compressors, and turbine and LPT shafts, in SNECMA's CFM 56 engine at the company's Evry plant in France later this year.
In addition it is specified on brand new and development gas turbines including the LEAP X and Silvercrest engines to replace an imported US material.
This follows Snecma's policy of using European sourced REACH compliant materials wherever possible.
