Boeing 787 takes first revenue flight with electrical wiring processed with Spectrum Technologies equipment
Friday, 28 October 2011

In the week that Boeing's 787 Dreamliner entered revenue service with launch customer ANA, Spectrum Technologies is pleased to note that virtually the whole wiring system for the aircraft is being produced using the company's UV laser wire marking equipment.

Scott Fancher, the head of the 787 programme, said the Dreamliner was a "game changer" for commercial aviation. "It sets a new standard in the design of commercial aircraft," he said.

Rather than focusing on increasing speed, Boeing has chosen to reduce operating costs through the use of composite materials, advanced aerodynamics, "more-electric" systems and modern engines to make the 787 more fuel efficient.

Each Dreamliner houses a total of approximately 62 miles (100 km) of wiring which has to be processed and marked with an identification code along the complete length of each wire or cable at regular intervals.

Spectrum Technologies, has been the global market leader in the design and supply of UV laser based wire marking equipment to the aerospace industry since it pioneered its introduction over 20 years, and is the sole supplier of wire marking equipment to the facility where the Dreamliner wiring system is assembled.
