Fokker celebrates opening of Mexican facility
Tuesday, 20 March 2012

Fokker Aerostructures, a business unit of Fokker Technologies, today celebrated the official opening of its brand-new production facility in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. Production has started with the manufacturing of tail sections for business jets, and the first products are expected to be delivered in April 2012. In the near future the facility will also produce other aerostructures work packages. Fokker will further explore the possibility of starting up activities in Mexico for its other businesses such as electrical systems.

Fokker Aerostructures has a leading market position in the design, development and production of wing components, fuselage panels and tail sections for business Jets and helicopters. The company designs and produces the tail sections for the Gulfstream G550, the Gulfstream G650 and the Dassault SMS business jets as well as the NH90 helicopter.

This expansion is an important step in the execution of Fokker's global footprint and growth strategy. Fokker has considered establishing a new facility in Mexico for some time, as one of the emerging economies. Fokker expects to achieve significant extra growth through this new location, in addition to the strong growth at its facilities in the Netherlands. Fokker's partner in the project is American Industries, a Mexican company that has supported leading aerospace industries in the start-up and management of their production activities in Mexico. The new plant has a production area of 6,600 m2 (71,000 ft2), and is expected to employ between 100 and 200 people within the next 2 years. Production in Mexico is also a significant step in reducing the company's exposure to fluctuations in the dollar exchange rate.

"A tremendous performance has been achieved by a large multidisciplinary team from Fokker in partnership with American Industries, the Chihuahua government and our customers. Within a very short time and working simultaneously, a great location has been built with state-of-the-art production processes and staffed by excellent employees. This increase in our global presence will enable us to further strengthen our competitive position", said Hans Büthker, COO of Fokker Technologies.
