Teledyne Controls to showcase multi-application Wireless GroundLink Comm+ system at Farnborough's International Airshow
Friday, 6 July 2012

Teledyne Controls, a business unit of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY), announced today that they will showcase their new Wireless GroundLink® Comm+ (WGL Comm+™) multi-application, communication system. Teledyne's WGL Comm+™ system is an enhanced version of Teledyne's popular Wireless Quick Access Recorder (WQAR). The new system is designed to automate data exchange between aircraft and ground systems using 3G and 4G cellular technology.

The new WGL Comm+™ system has been designed to provide faster wireless transfers of large volumes of data in addition to offering the support of multiple applications that require more bandwidth. The new, WGL Comm+™ system features Ethernet ports and ARINC interfaces which receive data from the flight data acquisition and/or Aircraft Condition Monitoring Systems (ACMS), and also connect to multiple on board systems, such as Airborne Data Loaders, EFBs, servers and IFE systems.

Teledyne's new Wireless Groundlink® Comm+ system supports multiple applications including WGL-Dataloading™, an end-to-end system designed to automate the distribution of avionics software parts and navigation databases across an entire fleet of aircraft. The WGL-Gateway™ capability can be used to support Class 1, 2 and 3 EFB system communications and provide content update. Other applications include the Aircraft Interface Device (AID) function which can provide the EFBs including iPads and tablets with access to airplane parameter data as well as to send and receive information while airborne via ACARS.

Among the most anticipated application being offered with the WGL Comm+™ system is the WGL-Fi™ capability. Soon to be released, the WGL-Fi™ function will provide content transfer and data communication over an onboard wireless hotspot for WiFi enabled EFBs, iPads, tablets and other Flight Operations computers. When coupled with Teledyne's latest ultra-compact and light-weight 2 MCU AVAS server, the cabin WiFi solution will provide a new, affordable alternative to the traditional in-seat based IFE systems.

Teledyne's Wireless GroundLink® solutions automate fleet-wide uploading and downloading of data between operator's back office server-based applications and avionics systems on the aircraft, reducing workload and ensuring on board systems are kept up to date. This technology enables fleets of aircraft to operate more intelligently resulting in improved aircraft availability, enhanced safety and compliance, and reduced fuel costs, thus improving overall operational efficiencies for the customer.
