HBZ Trunnion 80 – high performance cutting on 800 mm
Friday, 10 August 2012

With the new HBZ Trunnion series, Handtmann A-Punkt Automation GmbH is expanding its product portfolio with an horizontal machining centre that is suitable for table diameters of 800 mm, 1200 mm and 1600 mm. The first machine to be presented for the market launch of the new 5-axis milling centres is the HBZ Trunnion 80.

Although the HBZ Trunnion 80 is very compact it still can take enormous forces. Power and performance of the HBZ Trunnion 80 is impressive. "The PowerCube" combines high power with little floor space requirement only, high forces and a self-supporting construction with a compact design. Thus, we provide productivity and process security," states Andreas Podiebrad, President of Handtmann A-Punkt Automation GmbH.

850 mm in X, 850 mm in Y and 700 mm in Z are the axes travels, the horizontal machining centre HBZ Trunnion 80 is providing. The NC-rotary-swivel table with diameter 800 mm can carry workpieces up to 1.2 tons. The 5-axis machining centre is specialised in structural parts for automotive and aerospace on the one hand and a wide range of parts in mould-, die- and tool making, machine construction and energy technology on the other hand. The machining table is positioned horizontally for loading and unloading whereas it is swivelled into the vertical position for machining. The swivel range is defined between +30° and -120°.

Being optimally designed for allowing a flexible choice of high power spindles, the HBZ Trunnion 80 offers the possibility to install the best suitable spindle according to any requirement in machining and material, both for aluminium, steel and titanium. That's how we avoid using universal spindles that could indeed machine the whole range of materials but only with accepting decline in single parameters and compromising in performance.

For machining of aluminium, primarily spindles with max. 30,000 rpm which reach torque up to 38 Nm and power up to 81 kW are used. The preferred spindle for steel and titanium machining is providing with max. 18,000 rpm, torque up to 197 Nm and power up to 35 kW. The machine concept allows choosing the best suitable solution to reach maximum outcome and reduced unit costs or even achieve increase in productivity of up to 30%.

The horizontal machining of the workpiece creates notable advantages in terms of economics and provides highest process security when using powerful spindles. During the machining process, chips and coolants fall from the workpiece directly into the chip conveyor system. Without any impact on the milling process, they are evacuated directly and cleanly. Therewith, the user is saving time for cleaning, increases tool lifetime and provides good surface quality which is also resulting from the increased thermal stability due to minimized temperature influence on the workpiece.

The HBZ Trunnion 80 enables extreme powerful and highly dynamic machining in aluminium, steel and titanium. Accelerations up to 6 m/s2 and travel speed up to 45 m/min are even increased with the dynamic package option and reach up to 10 m/s2 and 60 m/min.

Accordingly, the machine construction which is based on FEM calculations, is very rigid in order to guarantee precise workpieces also in the long run during highly dynamic machining. Increased workpiece quality is provided due to various technical solutions: A double drive system in the X-axis with upper and lower guide ways, workpiece independent linear axes, direct measuring systems and the free of backlash and wear torque drive of A- and C-axis as well as the thermosymetric designed and stiff base frame.

To accommodate through horizontal high performance cutting, the HBZ Trunnion 80 chip management is designed for a huge amount of chips. Cut chips are transported directly out of the work zone via scraper and/or screw type chip conveyor. The chip conveyor's direction is flexibly adaptable to the particular production situation.

Despite of its small size, the HBZ Trunnion 80 offers best insights (from the front and from the side) and a good set-up situation from the front (through the wide sliding door) and from the top. Also when automating the machine, these good ergonomics are being obtained. Also always given is the good accessibility to the tool changer, which is designed as a chain magazine, equipped with 40 slots standard and chain magazine with 60 slots or rack type magazine by up to several hundred slots.

The 5-axis horizontal machining centre HBZ Trunnion with NC-rotary-swivel table and a machining concept which in total has been equipped and designed for powerful milling (and optional turning) combines all the best technological solutions within the HBZ Trunnion series. Specialised in machining of aluminium, steel and titanium workpieces with diameter 850 mm and height 630 mm max., the HBZ Trunnion 80 is the suitable solution for automotive, mould- and die, tool making, machine construction, energy technology and aerospace. The success of the internationally established machines of the HBZ series (HBZ CompactCell and HBZ AeroCell) confirms Handtmann in the expected success of horizontal machining of smaller workpiece sizes.
