Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc. strengthens tooling solutions for composite technology customers

Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc. announced today that its subsidiary Combined Composite Technologies Limited has opened a new 44,000 sq. ft. (4088m2) composite design and manufacturing facility in Segensworth, United Kingdom.

With the new site, which is located between Southhampton and Portsmouth, along the south coast of the United Kingdom, CCT becomes a fully integrated "design and build" composite tooling supplier, offering design, stress analysis, master model production, tooling design and production, material selection and final component production capabilities in one location.

"For over 50 years, CCT has been providing high-quality composite tooling, structures, fixtures and components to aerospace, automotive and defense industry customers," says Paul Collier, general manager of CCT. "The new investment signals our parent company's commitment to combining CCT's expertise in composite design and manufacturing with Momentive's deep knowledge of composite raw materials to deliver breakthroughs in processing and final composite performance."

The new CCT site follows the opening in March 2012 of the start-up of the Momentive Specialty Chemical's Transportation Research and Application Center (TRAC) in Duisburg, Germany. TRAC researchers will develop and test custom lightweight structural composite solutions for clients in the automotive, aerospace and mass transportation markets. The TRAC laboratory will complement existing research and development (R&D) facilities worldwide where Momentive business units have been working with these industries for many years, creating new resins, products and solutions, and providing technical support. The Transportation Research and Application Center (TRAC) is located at Momentive Specialty Chemicals' Duisburg plant, already an important epoxy production and R&D facility which develops new formulations for a range of end uses. The availability of fast-reacting formulations now allows slow Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) processes to be replaced with fast-molding methods. Driving down cycle times for composite components can help minimize cycle times for automotive applications. The new lab will house a state-of-the art dosing/injection unit and press from Cannon, specifically engineered for the rapid production of small-batch epoxy composite test components conforming to a wide array of process and customer conditions.

Joseph Bevilaqua, President, Epoxy, Phenolic and Coatings Division of Momentive Specialty Chemicals, adds, "The combination of CCT's solutions, our TRAC investment and our specialty portfolio will extend our capabilities and help us build partnerships with co-suppliers and customers, as this is key to the successful development of structural composite solutions for mass production in the Automotive, Aerospace and Mass Transportation segments." The Company's extensive product line of EPIKOTE™ Epoxy Resin / EPIKURE™ Curing Agent systems is well established in many composite, coating, electronics and adhesive applications.

The new CCT site features four Computer Aided Design (CAD) stations providing composite design and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) testing through a collaboration with Matchtech Engineering Services. The design area is capable of expanding to 10 design seats.

In addition to the enhanced design capabilities, the new facility is equipped with new tooling and processing equipment including:

• a 5-axis CNC router for in-house master model creation capabilities as well as trimming, drilling and planing of composite and aluminum components, including carbon

• a fully upgraded clean room facility for pre-preg layup and a 775 sq ft (72m2), fully secure International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) development cleanroom used for production of classified parts predominantly for the defense industry.

CCT typically works with other Momentive businesses, utilizing their thermoset resin products and processing expertise to develop prototypes and demonstrators for customers. Its primary focus is on the Aerospace, Defense and high performance Automotive industry segments.

CCT will be highlighting its enhanced capabilities at the Advanced Engineering Exhibition in Birmingham on November 7-8, Stand 1149 in Hall 1.
