Honeywell helps build largest additive manufacturing centre in Southwest
Wednesday, 18 January 2017

Thanks to funding from Honeywell and other leaders in 3D printing, the largest additive manufacturing research and teaching centre in the Southwestern U.S. opened Jan. 18 at Arizona State University.

Honeywell joined with Concept Laser and Phoenix Analysis & Design Technologies to fund the 15,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility on ASU's Polytechnic campus in Mesa, Ariz. The lab features more than $2 million in plastic, polymer and metal 3D printing technologies and equipment.

“Honeywell is thrilled to participate in the opening of the new additive manufacturing laboratory at the Arizona State University Polytechnic campus,” said Don Godfrey, Engineering Fellow at Honeywell. “We look forward to growing our relationships with the university in developing brilliant minds to tackle and overcome industry challenges associated with aviation and additive manufacturing."

For many years, Honeywell has worked closely with universities across the country, including ASU, to mentor students and help with capstone projects. This school year, three ASU Teams comprising of multiple students have projects focused on additive manufacturing.

ASU's new Manufacturing Research and Innovation Hub will be used for research and development programs including materials development and the prototyping of complex mechanical and energy systems.

In celebration of the grand opening, visitors toured the facility and learned more about the future of additive manufacturing. Industry experts, including Godfrey and ASU Polytechnic Dean Kyle Squires and Director Ann McKenna, shared how 3D printing is revolutionizing companies' ability to create parts faster, cheaper and more efficiently.

Honeywell is playing a leading industry role in additive manufacturing with 3D printing labs in China, Europe, India and the U.S.
