Metallisation launches new plasma system

Metallisation, experts in the technology of surface coatings, has launched a new Plasma system. The PS50M-PC system is the latest development in its 50kW Atmospheric Plasma Spray System. The new PS50M-PC system, while retaining all of the excellent features of the PS50M, now boasts a number of enhancements and improvements.

The PS50M-PC still provides mass flow control of primary, secondary and carrier gases, which ensures a repeatable coating quality. The latest developments have been made to improve the powder feeder and the operator interface is now touch screen operated, as opposed to the original push buttons. The result is a high quality, compact and, importantly, an easy to use Plasma system.

Whilst using the more technologically advanced touch screen, the layout of the control screen results in a very intuitive operator interface. If preferred, an optional keyboard control interface can be designed and supplied. The spray parameters can either be entered manually, via a list of programmable recipes or linked to bar-codes / production codes. The latter 2 options reduce operator coating errors. The flexibility of the plasma spraying process enables a wide range of high quality coatings to be sprayed with materials including plastics, metals, cermets and ceramics.

The PS50M-PC is ideal for a diverse range of applications such as print rolls, anilox rolls, paper rolls, yankee driers, mechanical seals, aerospace engine components and airframes, wire drawing capstans, automotive valves and non-stick cookware. The compact design of the PS50 pistol is perfect for small access areas and has a 90º option for use with a manipulator or robot. The 50kW capacity with internal and external nozzle options allows optimum parameters for a range of coating materials including grey alumina, alumina titania, chrome oxide, magnesium/zirconium oxide, nickel aluminium moly and tungsten carbide cobalt. The simplicity, yet efficiency, of the pistol means minimal maintenance, therefore, reduced downtime. Another benefit of the PS50 pistol is that its cooling system extends the lifetime of consumables and reduces running costs.

One of the unique offerings of the PS50M-PC is that as well as controlling the Metallisation PS50 pistol, the enhanced system can be supplied to control pistols from other providers.  This gives the customer flexibility to integrate the PS50M-PC control system into existing processes, where operators may be used to maintaining and running a non Metallisation pistol. This is also attractive to those companies, who wish to retain commonality of consumable spares when using another system to increase production capacity, or when they need to replace obsolete control equipment. As standard, the control system is capable of linking to 2 powder feeds and up to 250kW power supplies, enabling the system to control pistols up to 100kW if required.

By enabling the system to work with other non Metallisation pistols, it ensures the user can still benefit from the quality control system and simple operator interfaces offered by the PS50M-PC. A recent example of this was a project completed with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The RAAF has a Metallisation control system to spray coatings with a Metallisation PS50 pistol, a Metallisation mini plasma pistol for internal bore and a competitor's pistol.

The control system for the PS50M-PC consists of a PC with touch screen operator interface and a gas box. The gas box contains:

The primary gas mass flow controller A secondary gas mass flow controller A control PLC with relevant input/output interface Control valves and switching for sequencing and safe operation E-stop circuit with external interface to integrate into the safety circuit of the spray booth. Signals from the booth door, extraction system, robot and gas detectors, can all be linked into the system. Interlocks to inhibit the system unless certain parameters have been met within the preset limits – therefore ensuring consistency of coating quality. Fault indication strobe Interface between the gas box, powder feeders and robot by serial bus interface. Up to 255 items can be interfaced allowing multiple powder feeders to be linked. The PS50M-PC comes with Windows XP as an operating system. If a touch screen operation is not desirable a USB interface is also included to allow connection to a keyboard, mouse or other generic USB input devices. The system also provides real time data logging with programmable intervals. It works by recording the required parameters and actual operating parameters, including gas flows, powder feeder speeds, voltage and current, against time. It also records sequence events and faults.
