New GE X-ray detector brings portability to direct digital radiography

GE Sensing and Inspection Technologies has introduced the Prime 16x16 Portable, the latest addition to its range of X-ray detectors which are compatible with its Rhythm software platform. The new detector, weighs just 13 lb and can be connected to a laptop computer to produce images for instant review, allowing DR to be used in areas previously limited to radiography by the more time-consuming film or Computed Radiography (CR) techniques. Typical applications will include field applications in the oil and gas, aerospace and power generation sectors. The detector is of particular interest to users who tend to process high volumes of film and take flat shots , where its application can provide significant reductions in inspection costs.

The Prime 16x16 Portable is a 200µm detector and has a large active scanning area of 16in x 16in (41cmx41cm). It features GE's unique Quality Assurance Phantom which reports various detector statistics and parameters to ensure continuous high performance. Typically, this will monitor any significant performance changes and measure displays against a variety of IQIs (Image Quality Indicators), as well as providing trending for more complex image parameters.

In operation, the new detector, which is powered by any local electricity source though its own power supply unit, can be connected to a WindowsXP or Windows2000 laptop by means of its tethered cable. It is positioned behind the object to be inspected, in line with the radiation source, which can be X-ray or isotope. In the Rhythm DR acquisition software a number of frames are then taken and averaged to reduce noise and display a crisp, premium image on the laptop screen. The inspector can also take advantage of other Rhythm features by printing a report on-site through Rhythm Report or he can transmit the data to a remote Rhythm Review station for further investigation and perhaps expert analysis. If required, users can also take advantage of Rhythm Archive for long- term bulk storage and archiving of large numbers of digital radiographs. The new detector is DICONDE compliant and all the technique information and details of location, date and time and inspector is saved with the image.

The new portable detector is already proving itself in the field, as Shana Telesz, product manager at GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies, explains, "Apart from offering all the accepted benefits of digital radiography in terms of eliminating the need for chemicals and reducing radiation exposure through significantly shorter exposure times, the new detector has been used for on-wing inspection in the aerospace sector and it has already achieved significant cost savings in corrosion inspection in the oil and gas sector. It is proving that direct digital radiography can be carried out in areas which were previously impossible to radiograph by this immediate method of producing images and it is further accelerating the conversion from film to digital techniques."
