Lufthansa Technik opens new cabin innovation center in Hamburg

On the first day of the Aircraft Interiors Expo, Lufthansa Technik has officially inaugurated its new research and development center for the "Cabin Innovation" business unit. The new building represents an investment of nearly 10 million euros. In addition to offices, the center features state-of-the-art test laboratories and exhibition areas for the new products that are being developed for customers all over the world.

"This new facility marks an expansion of Lufthansa Technik's expertise in the field of cabin innovation while also paving the way for the long-term growth of this business unit," said August Wilhelm Henningsen, Chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Technik, on the occasion of the opening ceremony. "By holding the inauguration here in Hamburg on the first day of the world's most important trade fair in the aircraft cabin sector, we are emphasising just how important airline interior design is to this region and, in particular, to Lufthansa Technik. At the same time, the new innovation center represents a further milestone in the expansion of our activities as a manufacturing and design organization."

For Bernhard Conrad, head of design organization and innovation and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Lufthansa Technik, one thing is certain: "The new innovation center will allow us to further expand our position as innovative supplier of products related to the cabin both for airlines and VIP and business jet customers."

Cabin Innovation's core team at Lufthansa Technik currently comprises around 60 staff. That figure is set to climb to 100 in the new cabin innovation center. Further positive effects on jobs are being generated by the supplier operations that are also being incorporated in the building. All in all, the center is set to employ around 200 people.

Cutting-edge test facilities to monitor the airworthiness of new products (pre-compliance tests) have been installed in a so-called "qualification lab", including an environmental testing chamber and equipment to ensure electromagnetic compatibility, as well as vibration and crash test facilities. Lufthansa Technik's existing Office of Airworthiness and the IP-Management have also moved into the new building. This close proximity will speed up agreements and decision-making processes.

The new cabin innovation center was constructed using a combination of modular and solid structures with a façade that features a composite system for thermal insulation. Five storeys provide a total gross area of 6,300 square meters. The building was designed by the firm of architects Renner Hainke Wirth Architekten GmbH, which also designed the multiple award-winning reception building at Lufthansa's base in Hamburg.

The new home for the Cabin Innovation business unit is part of a major investment program at Lufthansa's base in Hamburg. The new engine overhaul center for CFM56 engines has been up and running here since January 2009, and work on enlarging the building that houses the Airframe Related Components business unit has already commenced. Meanwhile, the Landing Gear Services unit is also expanding with investments in facilities and landing gear spares.
