Spring-Fast(r) wire protection system from Device Technologies, Inc. equips new Sukhoi Superjet 100 regional airliner
Tuesday, 30 June 2009

The world's newest 100-seat regional airliner - the Russian-built Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) - is fitted with Device Technologies, Inc.'s unique Spring-Fast(r) grommet edging system, which streamlines the production process and enhances the aircraft's operational safety by providing protection against potentially dangerous wire and cable wear during its lifetime.

Device Technologies' FAA-approved Spring-Fast M22529/2 has been fitted on the SSJ100 beginning with its initial prototypes - one of which made its international debut at this month's Paris Air Show.

The grommet edging was specified by Bee Pitron, a Russian advanced engineering solutions provider that provides electronics and electrical engineering support to Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company for the SSJ100 development and production program.

"Sukhoi is applying best industry practices in the Sukhoi Superjet 100's development and manufacture, and the use of Spring-Fast will contribute to its successful aircraft production rate build-up, as well as ensuring the highest level of operational safety during the jetliner's operational lifetime," said Device Technologies Engineering Manager Steven O'Loughlin.

The Spring-Fast grommets are made from spring-loaded stainless steel, which is encapsulated in a protective polymer coating. Spring-Fast quickly snaps into place, using only the pressure applied by the installer's fingers - eliminating the need for adhesives - which minimizes the exposure of production line workers and depot maintenance personnel to hazardous materials and VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

The product is delivered in reels, with the material cut to length for the specific protective applications in the airframe.

Spring-Fast originally was developed for the electronics industry, and is fitted on storage and server computers, network switching and router systems, medical scanning, X-ray and dialysis systems, automatic teller machines, and other critical equipment.

It is increasingly becoming a standard for the aerospace and defense industries because of the grommet edge's excellent performance, ease of installation and production cost effectiveness compared to old-style nylon grommets. Spring-Fast is approved for use by the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration civil aviation authority.

Avio-Diepen B.V. handles international marketing for Spring-Fast.
