Envelope expansion continues as Sikorsky X2 Technology™ Demonstrator tops 100-knot speed milestone

Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.'s X2 Technology™ demonstrator achieved a maximum speed of 106 knots in a recent test flight at the Sikorsky Development Flight Center. Sikorsky is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).       

The X2 Technology demonstrator combines an integrated suite of technologies intended to advance the state-of-the-art, counter-rotating coaxial rotor helicopter. It is designed to demonstrate that a helicopter can cruise comfortably at 250 knots while retaining such desirable attributes as excellent low-speed handling, efficient hovering, and a seamless and simple transition to high speed.       

"As we continue to develop the X2 Technology features, the speed milestones are of note, since we ultimately are looking to achieve 250-knot cruise speed," said Jim Kagdis, Program Manager, Sikorsky Advanced Programs. "The current phase of testing is aiming to take us from 40 to 120 knots, and this latest flight signifies steady progress. For potential customers who are interested in this particular capability, it is another exciting step toward exceeding the average top speed of a conventional helicopter, which is approximately 160 or 170 knots, and setting a new standard."       

The X2 Technology program began in 2005 when Sikorsky first committed resources and full funding for the program's development.

As the program continues, we look forward to sharing the progress and bringing the innovation to its fullest potential," said Mark Miller, Sikorsky Vice President of Research & Engineering.       

Among the innovative technologies the X2 Technology demonstrator employs are:

• Fly-by-wire flight controls

• Counter-rotating rigid rotor blades

• Hub drag reduction

• Active vibration control 

• Integrated auxiliary propulsion system
