EMTEQ expands cabin power capabilities with key technologies

EMTEQ is expanding their cabin power product line in response to a clear market need for technology enhancements. As a company that prides themselves on being innovative, they are providing customers the best in technology and safety provisions. Pairing their innovation with responsive customer support, EMTEQ is introducing the following cabin power technology.

Plug Presence Detection – Plug Presence Detection (PPD) is a safety feature designed to provide power to an outlet only when a plug is properly inserted in the receptacle preventing electrical shock when the outlet is not in use or being used improperly. A current FAA memorandum, PS-ANM-01-111-165, indicates a preference for additional safety features in outlets aboard aircraft including PPD. PPD works through a series of mechanical switches, which when engaged, send a signal to the inverter to send electrical power. Power will only be applied to the outlet when the switches are engaged improving safety. EMTEQ's PPD design also provides fluid ingress protection as an added benefit.

Inverters – Converting 28VDC aircraft power to 115VAC 60Hz output, EMTEQ's inverters are a compact and lightweight option weighing less than one pound. Unlike large and heavy inverters on the market, EMTEQ's cabin power system is a one-to-one system with one inverter per outlet. This eliminates problems with sharing power between multiple outlets, providing maximum power to each outlet for optimal functionality. The compact size of the inverter allows for easier storage. The inverter has built in Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) protection and PPD control that receives and reacts to the signal sent by the PPD system in the outlet triggering the flow of electrical current. The inverter also has over-current, over-temperature, and over-voltage protections with an automatic safety shutoff. Overload protection shuts off power to an outlet when power goes over 200W. An LED indicator, driven by the inverter located on the outside of the outlet, signals when the inverter has activated the safety shutoff.

Ground Fault Interrupter – Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) is an additional safety feature that the FAA memorandum, PS-ANM-01-111-165, suggests. GFI protects against electrical shorts and potential shock and electrocution to the passenger from products plugged into the outlet when in use. The inverter detects an imbalance of current and automatically shuts off output to the outlet when the imbalance reaches an unsafe level. "EMTEQ's introduction of these products with ground-breaking technology increases our aircraft cabin capabilities," added Corporate Airframes Business Unit Director, Dan Rice. "These innovating solutions will save weight, increase dispatch reliability and include all the features that customers require. Customer response has been fantastic."

Incorporating the above technologies, EMTEQ's cabin power systems provide the flexibility in design and functionality to meet any customer need and styling, offering innovative and robust packaging with a variety of finishes, covers, and breaker options. EMTEQ's cabin power product family includes Universal Outlets, European Outlets, and US Outlets, as well as outlets for Ethernet and Phone/Fax Jacks and Inverters. Many of these technologies are being incorporated into cabin power system designs for upcoming OEM airframe platforms, as well as aftermarket customer programs.
