Rolls-Royce BR725 engines power first flight of Gulfstream G650

Two Rolls-Royce BR725 engines powered the successful maiden flight of the Gulfstream G650 at 1:41 p.m. on 25 November, 2009. The flight took place at Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation's headquarters in Savannah, Georgia, USA. The aircraft reached an altitude of 6,600 feet and a speed of 170 knots.

The G650 will now undergo an intensive flight test programme ahead of entry into service planned for 2012.

The 16,100lbf (71.6 kN) thrust BR725 is the most advanced member of the BR700 engine series. Incorporation of latest technology leads to improved performance, higher efficiency, lower fuel consumption and emissions as well as longer life. This enables the G650 to be capable of travelling 7,000 nautical miles at 0.85 Mach and at a maximum operating speed of 0.925, making it the fastest civil aircraft. The aircraft can climb to an altitude of 51,000 feet, which allows it to avoid traffic and inclement weather.

The BR725 received type certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for thrust ratings of 16,100lbf (71.6 kN) in June 2009. Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the US is imminent.
