DAE seals 20-year partnership with Cranfield to create first Middle East aerospace university

Today at the Farnborough International Airshow, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) and Cranfield University signed a 20-year partnership agreement to offer a wide range of top-level courses at the new DAE University, which will open its doors in Dubai this October.

The agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the parties in February, and will enable the institute to offer the first aerospace-focused business and engineering Master and Doctoral programmes in the Middle East.

Speaking at the press conference, Dr Mohammed Al Zarouni, Managing Director of DAE, said: "DAE will be forming international partnerships at the highest level of industry with the aim of establishing one of the most innovative and successful businesses in the global aerospace industry.

"The agreement with Cranfield, an organisation at the forefront of aerospace academia, underlines our determination to work with the best partners from around the world. It will deliver significant benefits for the students who will study at DAE University in the years to come."

Frank Hartley, Vice Chancellor of Cranfield University, in formalising the agreement with Dr Al Zarouni, added: "DAE has laid down a marker that it wants to become an industry leader. As an existing leader in aerospace higher education, this partnership with DAE University is a very logical and exciting step forward on an international stage for Cranfield. So we are very proud to be signing this long-term accord."

Courses will be validated by Cranfield University and utilise a team of Cranfield's specialist tutors, who will be permanently based in Dubai, working alongside a range of reputed international guest lecturers.

Highly regarded in the aerospace industry and also considered to be the leading aerospace university in the world, Cranfield has offered extensive aerospace degree programmes to over 3,000 students in the UK, with strong research relationships and partnerships in the industry. Through this partnership with Cranfield, DAE University students will complete MSc, MPhil and PhD programmes in all aerospace-related fields and receive globally recognised Cranfield University accredited degrees.

The initial curriculum will consist of four courses, each leading to MSc degrees in: Aerospace Vehicle Design, Airport Planning & Management, Air Transport Management and Logistics & Supply Chain Management. They will stretch over one-year full-time and two-year part-time periods.

In addition to MSc courses, DAE University will offer short courses, or modules, each lasting three to five days. This will enable aerospace professionals to pursue their continued education in a flexible, modular format that is most suitable to their needs

The range of degree programmes will grow over the next five years, with DAE University aiming to have more than 8,000 students enrolled by 2015. The rigorous entry requirements of Cranfield University will also apply to the courses it offers at DAE University, ensuring the highest academic standards.

DAE University will emerge as a purpose-built facility at Dubai World Central – the 140 square kilometre new airport and logistics city being constructed in Jebel Ali, Dubai. The location of the interim site will be announced shortly.

Rashid Al Malik, Project Director for DAE, said: "DAE University also plans to enter into partnerships with other internationally renowned institutions, and is currently in negotiation with a number of other universities and educational providers to offer aerospace-specific undergraduate programmes next year. Through these partnerships, DAE University plans to offer a wider range of aerospace and aviation-focused education and training in Dubai - from additional degree courses, to vocational training and pilot training.

"DAE University will create 2,000 direct and indirect new jobs in Dubai, with plans to contribute more than $250 million to Dubai's economy each year.

The development of DAE University is an integral part of DAE's strategic blueprint, which was created following a feasibility study carried out by A.T. Kearney - the global management consulting firm.
