TITAL expands in Russia

TITAL GmbH located in Bestwig, Germany has now expanded into the Russian aerospace market. Structural components made from titanium investment castings are now being built for the SaM 146 engine. A follow-on order for another 15 castings is pending and will be placed soon. This additional order will bring TITAL several million dollars of revenue from this strategically important customer. More large and complex components for the SaM 146 engine will follow. TITAL is continuing to expand its position as a supplier for large titanium and aluminum investment castings in Russia.

The Sukhoi aircraft manufacturer has already placed an order for the SaM146 engines for its Superjet 100 (SSJ 100). The Superjet 100 is a modern twin-engine local commercial aircraft. The low wing aircraft is used as a replacement for the Tupolew Tu-134 and Jakowlew Jak-42 which are still in use in Russia in large numbers. The project is carried out by Sukhoi together with several western partners, including the Italian company Alenia and Boeing. To date Sukhoi has received more than 100 aircraft orders.

"The castings now enter serial production", says Michael Kersting, Key Account Manager at TITAL "and we are confident that follow-up orders will be placed soon. Furthermore there is a great interest in large titanium investment castings from our new Russian customers." Due to the size these products they would be manufactured in the large casting facility which TITAL put into operation in December of 2008. The facility enables TITAL to produce large and complex titanium castings with dimensions up to 1.500 mm (60") and a weight of up to 300 kg (660 lbs). Philipp Schack, managing director of TITAL: "Until now the large titanium component market has been dominated by two American manufacturers. Now we can compete in this sector as well. Besides our present range of high quality aluminum and titanium investment castings we offer our customers a reliable European alternative for large titanium components. Our aim is the connection of measurable quality and cost advantages for our customers with a maximum of flexibility and delivery reliability."

Overall the current chances to break into the Russian market are very good, explains Philipp Jerusalem, Director Sales and Marketing at TITAL. Many customers appreciate and look for alternative suppliers. Michael Kersting: "In our discussions the customers criticize lack of communication and long processes of coordination with American suppliers. We, on the other side, could score with fast response times and excellent engineering. The communication within Europe just works better."

The CIS states have an enormous growth potential according to Philipp Jerusalem. The Russian and Ukrainian aerospace industries are poised for rapid growth and can rely upon their years of experience. Since the collapse of the Eastern Bloc no new developments have been promoted, but the potential is still present. The local aerospace industry has come alive again. This is also evident in the announcement that IRKUT wants to launch its own medium distance jet MC-21 in the year 2014, continues Philipp Jerusalem.
