CML Group Ltd F-35 contract award
Tuesday, 17 November 2009

CML Group Ltd is pleased to announce that it has received an order valued at over £800k from BAE Systems for the manufacture of composite airframe components for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the largest defence programme in history. The order covers the requirements of Lot 3 of the Low Rate Initial Production phase and follows on from work previously undertaken by CML Group for Lots 1 and 2.

CML Group's involvement with the JSF programme began with an 18-month selection process during which CML Group's Composites Division's clean room and autoclave were upgraded to meet the exacting standards required for the programme. Deliveries commenced in May 2008.

The parts being manufactured by CML are the complex-geometry, glass-fibre packers, which fit between the carbon skin and the titanium structure. After lay up and curing, the components will be machined using CML's extensive expertise in 5-axis machining.

Whilst consistent with CML's drive for increased involvement on military programmes, the contract will also contribute significantly to CML's strategic goal of achieving £10m turnover in composites within 5 years which will be supported through the establishment of a new state-of-the-art composites facility in 2010, located six miles from CML Group's existing facilities.

CML, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intelek plc, is a manufacturer of complex machined, composite and sheet metal components and assemblies for the aerospace industry. Intelek's activities include the design and manufacture of electronic components for the satellite and wireless communications sectors as well as aerospace engineering.

Geoff Stewart, Managing Director of CML Group Ltd, commented: "We are delighted to announce this new order from BAE Systems which is of huge significance to CML. It provides a solid platform for future investment in new technologies and facilities which is vital for our Composites Division to capitalise on the growth of composites within the aerospace sector."
