Meggitt wins Embraer KC-390 fire protection system

Embraer Defense Systems has chosen Meggitt Safety Systems to supply the fire protection system for the Embraer KC-390 Tanker transport programme. The award, which encompasses the entire ATA Chapter 26 Fire Protection System, is valued at over $9 million for the life of the programme. The system provides fire detection and suppression for the auxiliary power unit (APU), engine pylon and power plant; and smoke detection and suppression for the cargo compartment and E-bay.

The Embraer KC-390, twin-engine, medium-lift military transport aircraft will be capable of transporting up to 23-tons of cargo such as wheeled armoured vehicles, support equipment and personnel but can be configured rapidly as a tanker. Embraer Defense Systems is developing the aircraft with the Brazilian Air Force for entry into service in 2016.

Embraer Vice President Luís Carlos Aguilar commented: "We estimate some 695 military transport aircraft around the world will need to be replaced during the next decade, creating a very promising market for a tanker of this type."
