Aircraft fuel tank inerting systems benefit from high performance filters

23/02/2010

Press releaseIssued by Porvair Filtration Group Ltd.

Porvair Filtration Group, a world leader in filtration and separation technologies, has developed a range of high performance filters for aircraft fuel tank inerting systems.

The elimination of flammable fuel vapours in commercial aircraft fuel tanks is a principal safety priority. Lightweight onboard aircraft fuel tank inerting systems address this issue and can easily be fitted within existing aircraft designs. The systems reduce oxygen from its source of engine bleed air, delivering nitrogen enriched air into the aircraft fuel tanks reducing the risk of fuel tank flammability. U.S. Federal Aviation Administration rules are driving demand for early implementation of fuel tank inerting systems by aircraft manufacturers.

The Porvair filtration system ensures that the source of engine bleed air delivered to the sensitive air separation modules in the inerting system is free from both liquid and particulate contamination.

In 2007, the Microfiltrex Division of Porvair Filtration Group signed a long term supply agreement with Parker Hannifin Corporation to provide aerospace filtration systems for Parker's onboard aircraft fuel tank inerting system to be fitted to Boeing production aircraft. This agreement has recently been increased to include filters for the range of Airbus passenger jets. Porvair Filtration Group was selected by Parker for its extensive experience with aerospace filtration applications and it's in particular it's knowledge of fuel tank inerting filtration.

Porvair Filtration Group designs and manufactures specialist filtration components and assemblies to meet demands of the aerospace and defence industry for contamination control in hydraulic, fuel, lubrication and air systems. Our filters protect vital sub-systems such as flight controls, fuel management and fuel inerting systems, thrust reversers, braking and steering, power generation and air intakes in aircraft, helicopters, military vehicles, missiles and spacecraft.
