23/01/2018

Press releaseIssued by G&H Artemis (was Artemis Optical).

Artemis Optical, leaders in the design and manufacture of bespoke optical thin film coatings, has announced a partnership with Plessey Semiconductors Ltd to provide the next generation of augmented reality Head-up Displays (HUDs).

The project will utilise Artemis' world-leading expertise in designing and manufacturing thin film coatings for HUDs with Plessey's ground-breaking IP protected monolithic microLED GaN-on-Silicon technology.

Jamie Pindard, Sales Director at Artemis, said: "We are extremely proud to be working with Plessey, combining our unique capabilities to create innovative solutions for an industry which in itself is at the leading edge of the Industry 4.0 revolution and the IIOT movement. I'm especially pleased as well that this partnership helps to wave the flag for the high-tech industries in Plymouth."

Keith Strickland, speaking at the CES show in Las Vegas commented that, "Monolithic microLED technology using Gallium Nitride on Silicon is the only viable solution that can enable products that are not only compact enough to be worn without restricting the overall experience for AR and VR applications and in HUDs, but also provide the size, weight, power and luminance needed."

The partnership is the latest in a series of successes for Plymouth-based Artemis, which has produced over 3,000 HUD combiners and currently has products flying on trainer, military and commercial aircraft worldwide.

Michael LeGoff, CEO at Plessey, said: "Working with Artemis on this solution has put us across a cultural chasm, by bringing together the HUD technology, most widely used for defence applications, and our microLED expertise to benefit the augmented reality industry."

Both Artemis and Plessey will be visiting SPIE Photonics West, San Francisco, the show runs between 30th January and the 1st of February.

Artemis' 22,000 square foot purpose-built facilities include a 16,000 square foot environmentally controlled production laboratory and a range of modern coating chambers.

With over 25 years of experience in the design and manufacture of HUDs. Artemis are leaders in the design and manufacture of bespoke high-precision optical thin film coatings.
