For load measurements of rail wheel systems, particularly under extreme conditions on high-speed tracks, the telemetry system CAESAR VRT-32 has been specially developed. It makes possible the parallel, simultaneous collection of up to 30 strain gauge channels plus the necessary angular position information (sine, cosine). The compact VRT-32 does not need a counter-bore in the shaft and can be simply installed by means of a hub adapter on the outside of the wheel.
Each signal from the strain sensors is digitized close to the point of measurement with 14-bit resolution to ensure the lowest noise and the highest possible data quality. Each channel in the rotor electronics has independent signal conditioning amplifiers, antialiasing filters and analog to digital converters. The digital data is transmitted axially by infrared and the inductive power supply provides reliable continuous power. The stator sends the high-speed digital data via an optical cable to the reproduce unit. A single 19" rack can decode up to four VRT-32s (128 channels) and has a standard interface to a PC for data storage and evaluation.
