The National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has expanded its environmental testing capabilities with the addition of a custom-built blowing sand test chamber.

This new capability supports MIL-STD-810 and RTCA/DO-160 test standards and complements NIAR's existing blowing dust chamber, offering customers a comprehensive solution for evaluating equipment and components with potential exposure to harsh environmental conditions.

Blowing sand conditions are especially relevant for helicopter, VTOL and other aircraft operating in highly abrasive environments. The new chamber was engineered to address seasonal humidity conditions. With the ability to actively reduce in-chamber humidity to levels below standard requirements, the new chamber ensures schedule reliability and consistent, compliant testing.

The chamber features a vertical airflow system, differing from the industry-common horizontal configuration. This downward vertical column allows for more accurate and uniform sand distribution at lower air velocities, improving test fidelity. The chamber accommodates equipment up to 18 inches in diameter, includes full grounding, and offers passthrough ports for functional operation of test articles during testing.

"We are excited to bring this enhanced capability to our customers," said Nick Conquest, director of NIAR's Environmental and Electromagnetic Test Labs. "This addition strengthens our commitment to providing high-quality, dependable testing services and reinforces our role as a trusted partner in equipment qualification and certification."
