Stralis secures fuel cell contract with major Japanese aircraft industry partner

Stralis announced today that it has secured a contract with a major aircraft industry partner in Japan. Our team is providing expertise on high-temperature fuel cells (HTPEM) and hydrogen-electric propulsion systems for aircraft, leveraging proprietary Stralis technology and knowledge in these areas. The contract is a key stepping stone towards a longer-term strategic aviation partnership in Japan.

The country’s aircraft industry is a vital part of its advanced manufacturing sector, contributing to both commercial and defence aviation. It is home to major companies that produce key components for global aerospace giants like Boeing and Airbus. Japan also invests heavily in technological innovation, particularly in materials, propulsion and sustainability.

Hydrogen will play a significant role in Japan's energy transition strategy, as the country reduces carbon emissions and enhances energy security. Japan has been a global leader in hydrogen innovation, investing heavily in hydrogen production, storage, and utilization across various sectors, including transportation, power generation, and heavy industry. The country pioneered hydrogen fuel cell technology, with automotive companies leading the development of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). Additionally, Japan is advancing hydrogen-based power plants and exploring large-scale hydrogen imports from countries like Australia. By integrating hydrogen into its industrial ecosystem, Japan aims to establish a sustainable, low- carbon economy while maintaining its technological edge in clean energy solutions.

Stralis is building on this commitment of Japan’s aircraft industry towards sustainable aviation, where renewable energy and hydrogen will play a significant role. It intends to continue building strong Japanese partnerships, with the goal of flying its A36-HE Bonanza hydrogen-electric technology demonstrator in Japan in 2026.
