Unison plays key role in GEnx certification

As the Tier 1 integrator for electrical and mechanical systems on the GEnx-1B engine, Unison had much to celebrate recently when the 787 Dreamliner engine received airworthiness certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. Over two years of extensive ground- and flight-tests, Unison's systems on the engine met or exceeded specifications, helping the GEnx establish new standards for fuel efficiency and reduced noise and emissions.

As the Tier 1 integrator, Unison is responsible for the design, manufacture and integration of the engine's key electrical and mechanical systems, including: ignition system, electrical harnesses, sensors, power door opening system, core fire detection and suppression system, generator cooling system, generator fill system, ECS ducting, fuel system, engine tubing systems, hydraulic system, generators, return to fuel tank, pylon drain system and anti-ice system. Unison received its first Tier 1 integration assignment on the GEnx in late 2004.

With more than 1,100 engines sold to date, the GEnx is the fastest-selling high-thrust engine in GE's history. Based on the proven architecture of the GE90, the GEnx will succeed GE's CF6 engine. Compared to the CF6, the engine will offer 15 percent improved fuel efficiency, which translates into 15 percent less CO2. It is designed to stay on wing 30 percent longer than the CF6, while using 30 percent fewer parts, greatly reducing maintenance. The GEnx engine is scheduled to enter service on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
