The patented biofoam technology has replaced harmful additives in seat cushions, improving fire safety, durability and environmental impact, while allowing full customisation for airlines and OEMs.

Muirhead has unveiled BioPRO Foam, a protein-based aviation seat foam that is naturally fire-resistant and free from substances like melamine and PFAS. The patented material contains 20% bio-content and is made using hydrolysed collagen, a by-product of Muirhead’s leather manufacturing process.

By integrating BioPRO cushions with leather seat covers, Muirhead offers a streamlined, single-source solution that ensures aesthetic consistency, reduces lead times and simplifies supply chains. The foam’s chemical bonding process strengthens its structure, enhancing durability while eliminating internal abrasion.

“By incorporating our own bio-protein into the foam’s chemistry, we’ve eliminated the need for harmful additives while improving durability,” says Dr Warren Bowden, Head of Innovation & Sustainability at Muirhead and Scottish Leather Group. “This sets a new benchmark for next-generation seat foam technology.”

Moulded to precise customer specifications, BioPRO cushions eliminate waste and provide tailored support for different body types. Independent testing confirms their ergonomic benefits, ensuring passenger comfort across a range of aircraft seating applications.
