Radar autonomy and AI feature in West Coast test

AI-enabled target recognition allowed Lockheed Martin onboard systems to distinguish hostile vessels from civilian craft using only local radar processing.

Lockheed Martin has demonstrated an AI-powered Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system that can automatically detect and classify maritime targets. The test flight, held off the West Coast of the US, showed how its new SAR Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) capability could identify vessels of interest in near real time.

Traditionally, SAR images have required manual interpretation. Lockheed’s AI model removes that need by combining rapid image analysis with automated radar re-tasking. The system was deployed using low Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) hardware in the field, with no large cloud or ground station infrastructure.

John Clark, senior vice president of technology and strategic innovation, says: “This is a major leap for harnessing AI to help enhance situational awareness and decision-making capabilities, with unparalleled threat identification across extended ranges and all-weather conditions.”

The SAR ATR technology was developed by Lockheed Martin’s AI Center, Skunk Works and Rotary Mission Systems. Testing will continue throughout the year, with data contributing to future autonomous and collaborative aircraft systems.
